Recent scientific

this planet
there is no such thing as race
(2002)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A four part collage
there is no such thing as race examines:
1) Individual personalities confined within racist frames.
2) The artificiality and naturalness of cultural connections
3) Manifestations of racism

THE
FAITH OF WHORES(1999) a chamber opera
by lenore von stein at roulette
Notes on the storyThe
main character in The Faith of Whores is
one hundred and ninety-nine years old.
She's had plastic surgery.
She became a prostitute when
she was fifteen.
Her mother was her pimp.
Somewhere in her forties,
while attending a party at a mansion.
(all the women at this party werer prostitutes)
a man, probably the host,
tried to kill her.
He attacked her with a cast iron pan,
breaking her legs and other bones.
Later,
thirteen women were found
buried
in the park
across from
the mansion.
After she recovered she embarked
on an intense round of schooling
and became a doctor and a lawyer.
Many years later, she met the
President of the United States
at a charity event.
She became a presidential advisor.
From then on her life flowed effortlessly.

" The Faith of Whores
arose from, Von Stein notes, 'talking to a woman with two teenage children
who told me that boys routinely cal girls 'whores' and that girls refer to
themselves the same way.' Wondering whether that was a backlash of the
sexual revolution or a result of the barrage of Hollywood movies filled with
women with no personalities, Von Stein evolved a dramatic character to
explore her questions. " ---- Laura Freudig, The Haverhill Gazette,

FUNNY ANIMALS (1996)
at Brooklyn college
Funny Animals was a precursor of the chamber opera -- The Faith of
Whores.
Funny Animals explores defensive tactics, like hiding, passivity, going
limp - like a seashores clinging to a vine and changing color to match the
vine. Another is ignoring an unfriendly environment hoping it will go away
or change color to match you.
One way advertising works is by promising something in the future if the
consumer does something in the present, e.g.. find a mate by wearing Levi's
501 jeans. Inherent to faith is tomorrow.

les Trois Michels
(1994-1996)
The michels are funny,
dissonant and
easy to understand. Lenores lyrics are wily and willful; her musics
graceful but unpredictable. Les trois michels are creating their own
style of expressive music.

"In no way retro, she works for jazzs return to its former stature as
an innovative, current music..Her vocal range and purposeful evasion of
clichés.." ROBERT HAMBRECHT, THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF RECORDS
"In America, tradition is in
the eye of the beholder. Von Stein, uh,
revamps the chanteuse-of-love line, paying it homage while turning it
inside out." GENE SANTORO, PULSE
"She speaks in a pointed
surrealism.."DAVID DUPONT, CADENCE "..putting
not only her own lyrics but an extremely '90's, late eighties sensibility
and womans
point of view to this music. Her work is very emotional but its not
confessional.."
MATTHEW FINCH , WBAI, N.Y.C.
"She is derivative of no one or nothing, a true original. And although she
upholds the jazz tradition its done through the present tense of the
1990's. As Billie Holliday broke new ground, Lenore Von Stein is also
finding new ground." WILLIAM HICKEY, ACTOR
